Memorial Day

I hope you are all enjoying your Memorial Day weekend.  It's sunny and warm here, which is quite nice.  I'm stuck inside grading a pile of essays, which is not quite as nice.

Just wanted to take a bit of time to remember those who have served, fought, died, survived, seen friends die, and tried to mend lives.  Regardless of personal feelings about any war, human lives are lost.  And they should not be lost to memory as well.

In Flanders Fields by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the Crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead.  Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

  1. This is the first year I've noticed that we share a bank holiday with Memorial Day.

  2. Almost chose that one. Still gives me the shivers, in the most appropriate of ways.
Sorry about having to grade on a sunny day. I have the opposite problem: dreary, drippy weekend, but no essays. (my time will come...) Two not-so-hot ARCs to keep slogging through, though! Procrastinate by taking a walk in the rain?

  3. Ellie--What's your bank holiday in honour of? Or is it in honour of anything?

Laurie--Isn't it shivery in a wonderful way. Well, if you get your ARCs done, you can read all kinds of wonderful things. :)

  5. What a beautiful photo and poem. I kind of wish you hadn't mentioned piles of essays. There's one on my desk I'm trying to block out!

Bibliophiliac--Oooops, sorry! I didn't manage to get mine finished yesterday, so I'm going to have a LOOOOONG evening today :) Best of luck with yours when you're ready to face them.
